When soul meets reggae, something special happens.
There are certain songs that never lose their magic. Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” is one of them.
Originally released in 1978, the song has travelled through generations, crossing musical boundaries and becoming a firm favourite among soul lovers worldwide.
Now, British singer-songwriter Alex Watson brings her own interpretation to this timeless classic, giving it a fresh reggae treatment.
Produced by Lindel Lewis, the new single combines the emotional richness of the original composition with the warmth and rhythmic character of reggae.
A musical connection between soul and reggae
Soul and reggae have always enjoyed a close musical relationship. From the earliest days of Jamaican popular music, American soul recordings have influenced generations of Caribbean singers, musicians and producers.
Watson’s interpretation continues that tradition, taking a familiar melody and introducing a different rhythmic perspective.
The result is a celebration of two musical traditions that have influenced one another for decades.
Continuing the musical journey
For Alex Watson, music has always been about expression, storytelling and connection.
With a recording and songwriting career spanning more than three decades, she continues to explore new ways of interpreting the sounds that have shaped her musical identity.
Her latest single is another expression of that journey.
Whether you’re discovering “What You Won’t Do For Love” for the first time or have loved the original for years, this new reggae interpretation offers an opportunity to experience the song from a different perspective.
